In order to become a member of the Catholic Church, one must affirm: "I believe and profess all that the holy Catholic Church believes, teaches, and proclaims to be revealed by God." Roman Catholic Affirmation of Faith.
The reason for this is simple. If everyone agrees on what the faith entails, then we can walk together toward Christian perfection. It won't be easy, but it's possible with faith, hope, and charity. But if we spend eternity regurgitating old arguments and bickering about what's expected and what's not, we'll never get around to truly living the faith. Jesus prayed “I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me." (John 17:20-21). Notice how the evangelization of the world depends upon Christian unity!
